Hamilton heads the obscure session

Hamilton goes fastest in the rain interrupted first practice session in Shanghai. The opening minutes of the session  was misty and overcast, for nearly half the hour no action on the track.

Teams decided to run with inters and then come some practice action.

Lewis Hamilton’s weekend already met with a five place grid penalty due to gearbox change. He ran with the old gearbox to preserve new one.

He topped the session with last minute runs ahead of Mercedes pair Rosberg and Schumacher. Webber set fastest time until Hamilton’s run.

Hamilton appeared with a large array of sensors on the rear of his McLaren as they tested a new floor on the MP4-27. Redbull were using pre-season exhaust position during their run with Sebastian Vettel.

Hole in the floor to feed air into the diffiuser was a common practice on most cars on the grid.

The damp track resulted in Romain Grosjean’s slip off and Massa under steered on to the grass but no major incidents.

Drivers opted for medium tyres at the final ten minutes of the session – resulted in target times lowering down. Both Vettel and Kimi had DRS problem.

Flow-Vis paint on the rear of Ferrari didnt help them in those weather. Both ferraris were three seconds off the pace at the end.

Jenson was delayed by the traffic in his final  run. Both Saubers finished right back behind the Mercedes cars. Toro Rosso cars finished ahead of the ferraris.
